## Principles Seminar v0 **Session 7 - Privacy** Oskar, 2018-10-16 --- ## IV. Privacy > Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world. For us, it's essential to protect privacy in both communications and transactions, as well as being a pseudo-anonymous platform. Additionally, we strive to provide the right of total anonymity. --- ## Wall of shame collective generation - Active participation - Each person say one thing --- > "Privacy is dead, get over it" - traffickers in human attention --- > Privacy is necessary for an open society in the electronic age. Privacy is not secrecy. A private matter is something one doesn't want the whole world to know, but a secret matter is something one doesn't want anybody to know. Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world. (https://www.activism.net/cypherpunk/manifesto.html) --- ## Cypherpunk - Small mailing list in 90s - A lot of core ideas and people - BitTorrent, Wikileaks, Remailers, PGP, Bitcoin, smart contracts, Bitcoin, EFF, etc --- ## As a natural right - Offline privacy and blunted human intuition - Confusingly connected - Power of strong encryption - Against the grain --- ## Example: Vitalik ![foo](https://i.imgur.com/VPVOmFb.png) (https://www.reddit.com/r/ethereum/comments/8m3wj1/rothschilds_in_crypto_goodbadneutral/dzmspgv/) --- ## Privacy guarantees - Private chat - - What: E2EE chat, PFS - - Who: darkness/metadata (traffic analysis) - Private transactions (ZK-S(N/T)ARKS) - - Multiple wallets --- ## Pseudo-anonymous - "False" name, Whisper key - Voltaire and the king - Total anonymity? --- ## Bits of entropy illustration [Exercise](https://panopticlick.eff.org/) --- ## Metadata, who cares? > "We kill people based on metadata" - Michael Hayden (ex NSA director) --- ## Wall of shame 1. We don't know what we are leaking 2. We don't support private transactions 3. We don't support multiple identities/wallets --- ## Thanks
